Crosswork I
April 2021
Paper, gouache
This work is part of The Crossworks, an ongoing series of projects that have emerged from each other since 2021. The works have no definitive state nor form; they are always in transition. The interrelationship of color, matter, light and space is explored in this series. They are based on the fresco cycle “The History of the True Cross” by Piero della Francesca (± 1460; Arezzo, Italy).
Crosswork I originated from a study of the use of color in the fresco cycle. The matte character of the gouache enables the colors to contain as much of the natural light as possible. In the end this resulted in a work of 100 A3 sheets, each containing four colored fields. These sheets, containing a total of 400 different colors, serve as a handbook for all subsequent projects of The Crossworks. The individual sheets can also be shown as an independent work in different arrangements each time, depending on the space and the situation.
