Against the temporary (the newspapers fall in the mailbox, while the news is already outdated) I want to set a timelessness. In the search for a universal language, there are similarities with modernist visual language, particularly with the work of Donald Judd. Further reflection on his work plays an important role in this process. Against his belief in industrialization, I juxtapose fragility, chance, temporality, changeability and nuance. The visitor is drawn into an almost weightless and timeless whole. This system provides grip but also demands liberation. For this purpose, colour, rhythm and chance are used to turn the official frameworks into music. The tubes of gouache are leftovers from another artist, and the colours are put into the folder at random without personal, intuitive or rational interference. My role as maker consists of determining the moment to stop the actions. However, the works are never finished and can always be changed again. The works have no definitive state nor form; they are always in transition. The interrelationship of color, matter, light and space is explored in this series. They are based on the fresco cycle “The History of the True Cross” by Piero della Francesca (± 1460; Arezzo, Italy). Crosswork I originated from a study of the use of color in the fresco cycle. The matte character of the gouache enables the colors to contain as much of the natural light as possible. 
In the end this resulted in a work of 125 A3 sheets, each containing four colored fields. These sheets, containing a total of 400 different colors, serve as a handbook for all subsequent projects of The Crossworks. For Crosswork II, discarded shipping boxes were painted on the inside with the colors from the workbook of Crosswork I. All colors were self-made from pigments and casein. The matte character of the paint enables the colors to contain as much of the natural light as possible. Irregularities in the paint and in the stroke were accepted, showing the traces of the hand. The colors of four of the five planes were determined by the workbook, the fifth plane being a personal choice. This gave me the opportunity to activate, harmonize or contrast the colors. The 4 raised sides provide an architectural addition, allowing light and shadow to play an even greater role. It also creates an ever-changing field of vision for the visitor who moves around and in-between the work. As a result, colors constantly enter into new relationships, both among themselves and with the surrounding space.

The works have no definitive state nor form; they are always in transition. The interrelationship of color, matter, light and space is explored in this series. They are based on the fresco cycle “The History of the True Cross” by Piero della Francesca (± 1460; Arezzo, Italy). By Artware.pbk I was invited to be a guest at the monastery complex HX Hoogcruts for one day from sunrise to sunset. An event in which a limited number of invited guests were given the opportunity to encounter the building, an artist, an object, an action, an event, a sound, the time of day and other visitors, based on the course of the canonical hours. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; For this event, I provided 100 cardboard open boxes with colors from Crosswork’s workbook. All colors were self rubbed from pigments with casein. This matte paint allows the light to have an intense effect on the colors. Irregularities in the paint and in the stroke were accepted, showing the traces of the hand. 
Four Planes were determined by the workbook, the fifth plane being a personal choice. This gave me the opportunity to activate, harmonize or contrast the colors. The four raised sides provide an architectural addition, allowing light and shadow to play an even greater role. It also creates an ever-changing field of view for the viewer moving around it, where colors constantly enter into new relationships, both among themselves and with the surrounding space. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; During my stay in Hoogcruts, I showed the work Crosswork IV not as a static object, but as a dynamic work process. This meant that during the day — depending on the changing incidence of light in the building — the work constantly moved and spread itself through all the spaces to catch the incoming light wherever possible. Thus a play of light, color and space was created. Crosswork V consists of several cardboard plates that are pushed together two by two. This creates small architectural objects in various arrangements. While differing in length, they share the same height, giving the plates the option of interchangeability. Due to the matt character of the homemade paint, light and thus time have a great influence on this work. On a table, the objects look like models. On the floor, they become part of the bigger picture. The works have no definitive state nor form; they are always in transition. The interrelationship of color, matter, light and space is explored in this series. They are based on the fresco cycle “The History of the True Cross” by Piero della Francesca (± 1460; Arezzo, Italy). One morning, I had the idea to use the cardboard elements from Crossworks II and III to build a coloured environment in which I could dwell — a concept reminiscent to the utopian ideals pursued by artists of De Stijl. However, it was rough, messy and alienating because of the old material (cardboard) and random use of colours. The work was built on an intuitive and changeable basis with no concept or plan, bearing a resemblance to the improvised décor or the favelas in South America. Capturing photographs and small prints of the work allows for the gross materiality to be transcended, providing greater access to the viewer's imagination.
